SANDPIPER BAY GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB IS AWARDED MYRTLE BEACH AREA GOLF COURSE OWNERS ASSOCIATION 2010 GOLF COURSE OF THE YEAR
Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club, a 27 hole resort and public golf operation in Sunset Beach, NC, has been named the 2010 Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association. In a vote taken by the 90 course owners, the members selected Sandpiper from the 100 area courses and from two finalists on the basis of four criteria: Exceptional Quality of the Golf Course, Exceptional Quality of the Ownership and Management, Outstanding Contribution to the Community, and Significant Contribution to the Game. David Durant, President of the MBAGCOA, and George Hilliard, Executive Director made the presentation to General Manager Tim Tilma
This summer, Sandpiper Bay is concluding a three year renovation project in which all 27 holes were converted from bent grass to MiniVerde Bermuda grass. MiniVerde is one of the newest and best of the hybrid Bermudas that provide great putting surfaces in the hot and humid climate of the Carolinas. The Club also repaved cart paths, removed trees, refurbished the bathrooms and painted and recarpeted the Clubhouse during this time. This was all done despite the current state of the economy, and the general downturn of business, and the slow growth of the game of golf. This reinvestment into the facility exemplifies the commitment by the ownership to provide a quality golf experience to all the Members and guests who support Sandpiper Bay. Owners Don and Blair Tanner, who built the development in 1987, are proud of their facility and want to maintain and improve their market position. They are committed to the future of Sandpiper Bay and to enhancing the lifestyle of area residents and visitors. The Golf Club offers a great product and service to its’ Members and guests, and adds much value to the community it serves.
General Manager Tim Tilma, who holds both Bachelors and Masters Degrees, presented the nomination to the Association with Richard Kascask, the Head Golf Professional at Sandpiper Bay, and Jay Varallo, the Superintendent. Tilma, a 21 year PGA Member and the 2010 Bill Strausbaugh Award Winner for the Carolinas Section, stressed the contribution the Club has made to the neighborhood. Residents use the Club as the focal point of an active lifestyle, not only with golf, but also parties and games, and for promoting charitable causes like the Susan G. Komen Rally for a Cure. Sandpiper has hosted golf events in 2008 and 2009 that has raised nearly $30,000 towards that groups fight against breast cancer.
Sandpiper also promotes the game by growing the game with Junior programs and lessons and clinics for all players, and by offering quality golf at fair prices.
The Club was named Best of Sunset Beach, Golf Course Category, by the U.S. Commerce Association in 2008 and 2009, and now can claim the 2010 award for the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course of the Year.

Thistle Golf Club hosts Chamber's Talk of the Towns
Over 40 Chamber members and area municipality officials joined together on Tuesday April 27th for a "Talk of the Towns" to hear about current projects taking place around the county. Dr. Brian Lank, the Chamber's Vice-Chair for Community Development, and Ron Watts, the Chamber's Chair, lead the meeting.
Some highlights from the conversations:
Brunswick County: The commissioners are facing a budget deficit of up to $10 million for next year, driven primarily by lower sales tax revenues. The slower economy certainly has an impact with the lower revenue. But the state also changed the way sales taxes are re-distributed back to the counties (now based on where sales take place instead of population). The county will try to balance the budget with cuts from staffing, school system, and possible use of some savings. Though a solid waste fee is being considered for the future, it probably won't happen this year. A county-wide recycling program is still under consideration for the new year.
Ocean Isle Beach: The lower sales tax revenues impacts towns as well, and puts greater emphasis on our tourism base. We need to keep our visitors happy and eager to return! We also need to try to buy locally, not only to help local business, but to keep the sales tax coming to local government. Renourishment on the east end should begin any day, with approximately 510k cubic yards expected to be placed on the strand at a pace of 30k to 50k per day.
Sunset Beach: The new bridge should be open for driving purposes by early August, with the full project finishing by the end of the year. The mainland sewer installation should be completed by the end of the year. Island work should start in the fall, and take about 1.5 years. The Town is also in the planning stage for projects such as a boat ramp, a 2nd fire station, and a possible waterway park.
Holden Beach: is finishing up its own beach renourishment project. Its bike paths have been a success for both residents and guests-the Town is hosting a bike event this coming week.
Shallotte: the Smith Avenue extension project is on schedule, and should be completed within 10 to 12 months. Plans are progressing for street and sidewalk upgrades, and for a small parks department.
Calabash: The sewer project is on track to be finished by late summer. The Town is planning several community events to help bring folks to the riverfront through the year.
Carolina Shores: has a goal of commercializing both sides of US17 to help support the town beyond just property tax in the future. They are looking forward to BCC's new annex to help spur some of that development. Work on maintaining storm water swales and some town streets will be undertaken starting this year.
One of the goals of the meeting was to let folks know that the Chamber is ready to restart its Government Affairs Committee to help identify key area issues that impact local businesses, and then to work with local elected officials on those issues. Two issues that were mentioned several times during this meeting were the need to promote local shopping and a coordinated recycling program.
The Chamber is seeking volunteers now to work on this important committee. If you would like to help, please let Cathy Altman at the Chamber office to show your interest.
Thanks to Gene Weldon and the staff at Thistle Golf Club for both hosting and providing the free meal for this event!
